Our Games, Our Stories: Ashwin Lokare
Discover how Glasgow 2014 shaped the city’s future and what to expect in 2026, as Ashwin Lokare shares his firsthand experiences and memories.
Why the Games Matter: The Stories They Create
The Commonwealth Games are more than just a sporting event. They bring people together, leave a lasting legacy, and create stories that shape a city long after the medals have been awarded. In 2014, Glasgow welcomed the world with open arms, transforming from an industrial powerhouse into a global stage for sport, culture, and camaraderie.
The excitement in the city was electric. From volunteers to athletes, taxi drivers to café owners, everyone had a role to play in making Glasgow 2014 an unforgettable experience. Fast forward to 2026, and that same spirit of unity and progress is set to return, reinforcing the city's reputation as a world-class events destination.
One person who witnessed this transformation firsthand was Ashwin Lokare, who worked with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee. His experience, from inside the Games Village to the streets of Glasgow, offers a unique perspective on what the event meant to the city and its people.
Glasgow’s Major Events Journey: Strength to Strength
For Ashwin, Glasgow 2014 was a turning point not just for the city but for its future as a global event host.
“I was fortunate to have worked for the Organising Committee for a couple of years during the 2014 Commonwealth Games, when the city was still in its infancy as a major events destination. Since then, Glasgow has hosted quite a few sporting and non-sporting events, making it the dominant force in the major events world. I am quite excited to see the positive changes that 2014 brought to the city and see that going from strength to strength with 2026 and beyond.”
The Games were a catalyst for Glasgow’s growth, turning it into a destination known for its world-class events, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture. The city that once relied on its industrial past has now embraced a future rich in sport, arts, and innovation.
The City Embraced the Games with Open Arms
Despite his demanding role within the Games Village, Ashwin still remembers the energy of Glasgow’s people every time he stepped outside.
“To be honest, my role during Glasgow 2014 was in the Games Village with hardly any time spent in the city. However, during my daily commute, I clearly remember the excitement with which the locals embraced the event, welcoming guests from all over the Commonwealth with the hospitality that Glasgow is indeed famous for.”

It was this warm welcome, this shared sense of pride, that made Glasgow 2014 so special. The Games weren’t just about sport—they were about community, culture, and the people who made it happen.
Proud of Glasgow’s Transformation
When asked what makes him most proud about Glasgow, Ashwin points to the city’s remarkable evolution over the years.
“The transformation of Glasgow from an industrial city into a vibrant hub of arts, culture, sport, and events is something to be proud of, and the Games in 2014 had a major part to play in that change.”
From world-class venues to thriving creative industries, Glasgow’s journey has been one of reinvention, and the Commonwealth Games have played a vital role in shaping its identity.
What Visitors Can Expect in 2026
For those coming to Glasgow for the first time, Ashwin highlights the city’s unmistakable character.
“Behind the tough accent, there is a genuine warmth and generosity within the people of Glasgow. The drummers at Buchanan Street are an absolute experience!”
It’s this energy, this sense of belonging, that will make Glasgow 2026 another unforgettable chapter in the city’s story.
Inspired by the Athletes and Their Journeys
Finally, Ashwin reflects on what inspires him most about the Games—the people behind the competition.
“Seeing athletes from all backgrounds and nations across the Commonwealth competing with passion and heart, pushing their limits, is quite something to see. Having worked in the Games Village, you feel as if you have contributed in a very small part to that journey, allowing them a platform for excellence. Some of their stories—from humble beginnings to world-class athletes—are something to be admired and celebrated.”
The Commonwealth Games are about more than sport; they’re about perseverance, ambition, and the incredible journeys that bring people to the podium. They’re about the impact on a city and its people, the pride in hosting the world, and the stories that live on long after the closing ceremony.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As Glasgow prepares for another incredible Games in 2026, Ashwin’s reflections remind us of what makes these moments so special. It’s not just the world-class sport or the iconic venues—it’s the people, the stories, and the shared experiences that make the Games truly unforgettable.
